L-Phenylalanine, an essential amino acid, is a precursor of the amino acid tyrosine and a whole series of neurotransmitters and hormones. Because tyrosine is necessary for the synthesis of proteins and production of the nuerotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine, L-Phenylalanine is also a direct precursor of PEA (phenylethylamine), another important neurotransmitter. Phenylalanine is an extremely important nutrient that must be obtained through the diet or by supplementation.
