B-1 is intimately involved in many aspects of nerve health and function. Once in the body, B-1 is activated to a co-enzyme form necessary for energy production and the formation of acetylcholine, a major neurotransmitter. Magnesium plays a role in neuromuscular transmission and activity, and supports muscle relaxation. Excessive alcohol intake may increase the need for B-1, and B-1 may be missing from some diets of highly processed “junk food”.
