Due to low-fat or vegetarian diets, many people have sub-optimal concentrations of DHA. It is the most prevalent fatty acid in the brain, where it supports a positive mood and the transmission of electrical nerve impulses and communication. DHA is particularly critical for fetal and infant brain and eye development. It is necessary for pregnant mothers to transfer DHA directly to the fetus, via the placenta, and to the newborn via breast milk.
