Supplemental vitamin D should be used cautiously in those on digoxin or any cardiac glycoside or suffering from hyperglycemia. Drugs that many interact with vitamin D include bile sequestrants, ketoconazole and related drugs, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and antacids with aluminum. Pregnant/lactating women should consult a physician before use.

Vitamin D is normally produced in the skin as a result of exposure to uv light from the sun. However, the use of sunscreens, aging, avoidance of sun exposure, and living in the Northern latitudes can significantly reduce vitamin D production by the body.
